Michael Randall 1947–2000

Michael Randall devoted his life to developing painting and drawing techniques that always pushed the boundaries of his knowledge and skills. He had an uncanny eye for the private moment: a conversation between two friends; a mother talking to her child; the turn of a head as the subject’s attention is caught. It was an exciting experience to be in his studio with him in full flight — not that he would notice anyone’s presence.
Born and raised in Southampton, Michael drew and painted from as far back as he could remember. He graduated from Southampton Art College, where practical jokes were as high on the agenda as life drawing, painting and printing. In the 1970s, he studied at the Royal Academy Schools, excelling in life drawing and winning two silver medals for drawing and painting. His successful RA Schools Diploma exhibition led to Southampton City Art Gallery purchasing ‘Daydream’, the major work of that show, which remains in the Gallery’s permanent collection. Numerous exhibitions over the next three decades gathered an enthusiastic audience for his vibrant paintings, intricate prints and exciting sketches. His work is represented in many private collections throughout England, Europe, Japan and the US.
